Live from Austin TX $12.78 The man who brought the Bakersfield sound back to the country charts, Dwight Yoakam, was on the road supporting his third album (and one of his best), 1988’s Buenas Noches from a Lonely Room, when he and his band made a stop in Austin, TX, to appear on one of television’s best showcases for quality roots music, PBS’ Austin City Limits. Yoakam was at once a staunch traditionalist and a nervy Young Turk when he played his ACL gig, and both sides shine through in the performance, which has been issued on compact disc as Live from Austin, TX. Yoakam and his band (including guitarist Pete Anderson) burn though these songs with plenty of spark, and demonstrate that the best sort of respect to show this music is to play it with the same swagger and confidence that Buck Owens, Johnny Horton, and Merle Haggard showed back in the day. While Yoakam is still doing that today, there’s something fresh and emphatic here that shines brighter than on some of his later work, and if this disc isn’t as ambitious as the later Dwight Live, on its own modest terms it’s the more satisfying listen. Live from Austin, TX $12.78 From the Live from Austin, TX series documenting performances from the syndicated Austin City Limits public television program comes this volume of Jerry Lee Lewis from October of 1973. According to Terry Lickona’s liner notes, Lewis’ wife had died a few weeks earlier in a very controversial swimming pool accident and he almost didn’t make it. Those lucky enough to hear this performance — and now see it on the DVD version as well — are lucky he did. Of the many officially released and bootlegged performance of the Killer from his mid-’50s debut on Sun to the present day, this one ranks among the finest. There are 15 cuts here, featuring Lewis fronting a taut sextet that includes guitarists Kenny Lovelace and Joel Shumaker, bassist Bob Moore, organist Bill Strom, and drummer Buddy Harmon. The tunes range from Hank Williams’ “You Win Again” to Chuck Berry’s “Sweet Little 16,” “39 and Holding,” “C.C. Rider,” “Chantilly Lace” (leaving the Big Bopper’s version in the dust), Charlie Rich’s “No Headstone on My Grave,” Ray Charles’ “What’d I Say,” and more, all topped off by his best-known tracks: “Great Balls of Fire” (written by Otis Blackwell, the man who made Elvis Presley famous) and, of course, “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On.” The show is beautifully edited and the Killer’s control of the gig is total. He understands how to bring it down and tear it up. There are a number of volumes in this series that simply don’t get it for one reason or another; Jerry Lee’s gig on Austin City Limits does — and hard. Live From Austin TX $12.78 Steve Earle wasn’t yet one of the most respected, intelligent, and controversial voices in Nashville when he stepped on-stage for a taping of the long-running public television series Austin City Limits in the fall of 1986 — back then, he was a promising newcomer who was touring behind his well-received debut album, Guitar Town, and was recording the follow-up in fits and starts when he had downtime from the road. Live from Austin TX, part of a series of CD and DVD releases from the rich Austin City Limits archive, captures Earle when his confidence and stage smarts were not quite what they would be later on, and though there are more than a few great songs in this set, many of the tunes that would become cornerstones of his later live show (especially the mature work from his post-”vacation in the ghetto” period) haven’t been written yet, and frankly this edition of the Dukes wasn’t the strongest he would ever have. But Earle’s energy and enthusiasm is well in evidence on this set, his voice is in solid shape, and the performance builds up a solid head of steam as it chugs through a solid 17-song set.
